Going back to school was not something I thought I would do.  I had taken a course here and there over the years, but not recently.

Of course, if a friend said they wanted to return to school, I would encourage and even cheer them on!  For me, however, it wasn’t something I saw myself doing at “my age”.  This is an odd thing for me to admit because I believe in life-long education, but was I ready to commit?

I went back and forth in my head over this.  At the time, work was crazy insane for me and the thought of putting in many stressful hours at the office and then going to night school made me cringe!

I was, however, very much interested in nutrition and eating well. I wanted to learn more and hopefully get my Holistic Nutritionist designation. Losing weight over the last few years and embracing a clean-eating lifestyle has been a game changer for me.

After almost letting “Negative Nelly” (who sometimes, takes up way too much space in my head) get the better of me, I took the plunge in 2019 and registered for the holistic nutrition program with the  Nutraphoria School of Holistic Nutrition.  This is an online program which was perfect for me because I did not have to attend night school.  Been there, done that!  I could take this program online and work at my own pace, while keeping within the timelines that are set out in the program.

Not gonna lie … I was scared as f#%$!

But, two years later, I am so grateful that I made the absolute right decision for myself!  I graduated the program in 1½ years (due to being laid-off from my job and finding myself with LOTS of time on my hands – hello pandemic!).

So, what factors went into my decision?

Firstly, I had been thinking about this for a really LONG time!  I mean, I wanted to do this a few years prior.  Why didn’t I do it then?  Life was seemingly putting up roadblocks at every turn.  Work stress, family stress, life stress … STRESS became my best friend!!  I arrived at a point and thought “Fran if not now, when?”  Girlfriend was not getting any younger!

Secondly, the time was going to go by in any event!  I could be finished the program in two years, or I could be still thinking about the program in two years.  I had to pull the trigger!  When you get to midlife, you know that two years can be a lifetime or it can go by quickly.  It went by quickly.

Thirdly, I desperately needed to do SOMETHING!  Let’s go back two paragraphs.  Something had to give.  I was doing a lot for others and not for myself.  Funny how that happens, huh?

This blog post is a gentle reminder that the concept of healthy isn’t solely about the foods we eat.  It’s about the actions we take or don’t take that will serve us down the road.

So you know all those things you are thinking about doing?  You should do them!

That’s all.
